Child Advocacy

Children are often the most oppressed, exploited and victimized. Children remain the most voiceless and the most discriminated against group of people in all societies. The Child Advocacy Committee of the Oregon Synod works on combatting this issue.

Welcoming New Members

The Child Advocacy Committee always welcome to new members. If you are interested please contact Deb Mantey at 503-413-4191 or dmantey@qwest.net.

“For Every Child A Better World”
Children’s Advocacy Day

A photo of the shoe labyrinth from “For Every Child, A Better World", a Children's Advocacy Day was featured in the Metro section of the Oregonian on April 23. Almost 200 people attended the day at Pioneer Square in Portland on Sunday, April 22. The event was co-sponsored bythe Oregon Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon.

Participants learned about the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and what they could do to help accomplish them locally. Visit the online photo album to get an overall picture of the day. Deb Mantey, Oregon Synod Congregational Resource Coordinator, commented, "The day was a great opportunity as Lutherans and Episcopalians to witness publically our effort to work toward the Millennium Goals."

Background on the Millennium Development Goals
APRIL 2006
In September 2000 all Member States of the United Nations unanimously adopted the Millennium Declaration, agreeing to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the year 2015. Just six years after these goals were made, however, progress has been slow, and more than one billion people still live on less than one dollar a day. “We are in a position to end extreme poverty within our generation,” said Jeffery Sachs, head of the United Nations Millennium Project. “Not just cutting poverty in half—if we want to eliminate extreme poverty, we can do that by 2025.”
