Around the synod

What Can I Do In Response to the Storms that Hit Oregon and Washington?
This year the 2008 Oregon Synod Convocation is being held in Seaside, Oregon. To assist in the relief efforts we are inviting you to pack and bring a box of food to restart a family's pantry.

What should I put in the box?

  • Items that are not usually part of what is available at relief centers and/or at the Oregon Food Bank outlets.
  • Examples are: coffee, tea, sugar, Krusteaz pancake mix, syrup, cooking oil, salt, pepper, cinnamon, garlic powder, onion power, pepper flakes, flour, corn starch, yeast, peanut butter, jelly, mayonnaise, tuna, canned ham, catsup, mustard, pasta, rice, canned soups, macaroni and cheese, etc.
  • Please also consider Latino pantry food. Examples are: pinto beans, rice, pastas, garlic power, cumin, salt, pepper, and corn tortillas.
  • Download a pantry list and a sign to attach to the outside of the box.

What type of box should I use?

  • Use "Bankers Boxes" which have handle holes on the sides; this limits the weight, and it is easily stackable for food banks and for transportation. Boxes are available at Office Depot and similiar stores.

Where and When Should I bring the box?

  • Have your pastor bring your box(es) to the 2008 Bishop's Convocation, Seaside January 2-4.

Climbing the Mountain with Matthew
7:00 pm -8:00 pm

Did you miss the "Christmas Bowl" with Bishop Dave Brauer-Rieke? The “Christmas Bowl” was an experiment in stretching beyond our congregational boundaries and being together as a synod.
It was relatively successful and has encouraged us to try this type of meeting one more time. Bishop Dave will be holding an on-line "Climbing the Mountain with Matthew" seminar on January 31st. This time audio will be included. Information on this event will be coming after the first of the year. Keep on the lookout.

"Manna and Mercy: Traveling through the Bible with wit and whimsy."

Speaker: Pastor Dan Erlander
Atonement Lutheran, 2315 N Coast Hwy, Newport

The workshop will be based on Pastor Erlander's book "Manna and Mercy: A brief history of God's unfolding promise to mend the entire universe," published in 1992. This book and others by Erlander are available through his web site, where you can also learn more about him: DanielErlander.com. Dan is a theologian and teacher who has a wonderful ability to bring Bible stories to life through his books, his droll cartoon-like illustrations, and his thoroughly entertaining speaking. You won't want to miss this weekend with Dan! As well as being an author of several books, Dan has been Campus Pastor at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA; Village Pastor and Resource Center Director and Teacher in Residence at Holden Village; and a pastor on Whidbey Island, Wa. Now that Dan is retired, he is in great demand as a speaker; we are so honored that he has agreed to come to Atonement. Please contact Alice and Bruce McCain at amccain@newportnet.com if you have questions.
