Around the synod

What Can I Do In Response to the Storms that Hit Oregon and Washington?
This year the 2008 Oregon Synod Convocation is being held in Seaside, Oregon. To assist in the relief efforts we are inviting you to pack and bring a box of food to restart a family's pantry.

What should I put in the box?

  • Items that are not usually part of what is available at relief centers and/or at the Oregon Food Bank outlets.
  • Examples are: coffee, tea, sugar, Krusteaz pancake mix, syrup, cooking oil, salt, pepper, cinnamon, garlic powder, onion power, pepper flakes, flour, corn starch, yeast, peanut butter, jelly, mayonnaise, tuna, canned ham, catsup, mustard, pasta, rice, canned soups, macaroni and cheese, etc.
  • Please also consider Latino pantry food. Examples are: pinto beans, rice, pastas, garlic power, cumin, salt, pepper, and corn tortillas.
  • Download a pantry list and a sign to attach to the outside of the box.

What type of box should I use?

  • Use "Bankers Boxes" which have handle holes on the sides; this limits the weight, and it is easily stackable for food banks and for transportation. Boxes are available at Office Depot and similar stores.

Where and When Should I bring the box?

  • Have your pastor bring your box(es) to the 2008 Bishop's Convocation, Seaside January 2-4.

Jerry Evenrud - New Beginnings

Greetings from
Grace Matters

For this final program of 2007, I elected to focus on the place and power of unconditional love. There seems no better way to begin the New Year than to look at the difference that love without condition could make in our world. Just imagine what it would mean for families, communities, and nations to embrace a love that is not busy always establishing qualifications.

Climbing the Mountain with Matthew
7:00 pm -8:00 pm

Did you miss the "Christmas Bowl" with Bishop Dave Brauer-Rieke? The “Christmas Bowl” was an experiment in stretching beyond our congregational boundaries and being together as a synod.
It was relatively successful and has encouraged us to try this type of meeting one more time. Bishop Dave will be holding an on-line "Climbing the Mountain with Matthew" seminar on January 31st. This time audio will be included. Information on this event will be coming after the first of the year. Keep on the lookout.

For several years now, Amie Rose has been gathering musicians in her basement studio who are interested in the performance and preservation of the great jazz classics. From Duke Ellington to Miles Davis to Antonio Jobim these songs are the stars that have stood the test of time and remain as fresh and exciting as the day they were written. Currently, the Semitones are a seven piece combo.

27 January - The Unlikely Quartet with Collier Brown on Horn, Flute, Peck Horn & voice, Bob Bruce on Horn, Oboe, Recorders, voice, & Cornet, Phil Osborn on Horn, Piano, Ophiecleide & voice & Laura Cummings on Piano. We roam through the centuries and types and styles of music as we find them.

3 February - Encore Brass began in fall of 1978 as a quintet.  Founding members Glenn Taylor (conductor) and Ruthanne Bennett (French Horn) are still active and the group normally operates with a membership of about fifteen players.  The ensemble is made up of musicians with a variety of “other lives”, including architects, teachers, engineers, professors, administrators and retirees.
