Earn a Two Percent Discount on 2008 Health Care Contributions
It’s where you help your congregation save money
2008 Wellness Benefits Basics
What you need to know ...
- If you have insurance through the ELCA, The ELCA Board of Pensions is going to pay you to take the confidential Mayo Clinic health risk assessment and pursue health improvement activities.
- Take these steps and it will credit up to $300 into your 2008 personal wellness account (defined legally as a health reimbursement arrangement).
- If your spouse is covered by the plan and participates, you'll get another $300 credit. Use these dollars to reimburse yourself for eligible health care expenses like deductibles and copayments.
- If 75% or more of the members and spouses receiving ELCA PPO Benefits in our synod take the health risk assessment, our entire synod's congregations and organizations will receive a 2% discount on health plan contributions for 2008.
- This discount applies starting the month after our synod reaches the 75% goal. The earlier we reach 75%, the more we'll all save on 2008 health contributions.
- Remember, the health risk assessment is confidential. The Board of Pensions will not share personal health risk assessment results or participation information with employers or synod offices.
What you need to do ...
- Read the member toolkit coming by mail this fall from the Board of Pensions.
- Register on the Mayo Clinic EmbodyHealth web site.
- Take the health risk assessment well before Jan. 1, 2008.
- Pursue health improvement activities online.

ELCA Worship staff offer two litanies and ELW hymn suggestions for communities and congregations concerned about the Southern California wildfires, and for those who are directly affected by them. Find these resources at www.elca.org/worship and at www.elca.org/disaster (under "For Congregations" in the Southern California wildfire section).
A web-based disaster alert about the Southern California Wild Fires is online at www.elca.org/disaster, ready for congregations to reproduce in bulletins and newsletters. |

Lutheran Disaster Response is deploying resources in California in wildfire disaster areas. LDR is working through the California Lutheran Social Services Agencies. The major disaster response faith based organizations have met and shared losses, challenges, and needs. LDR will partner to assist families most affected by the disaster which now covers seven counties.
FEMA has a max grant available to homeowners of $28,800. They also can facilitate SBA loans which carry an interest rate of approximately 2%. FEMA is currently accepting tele-registrations. Once households are registered, FEMA assessment teams visit each property and household member to determine losses. Rental assistance is available, as well as funds to replace some furnishings. Usually checks are issued by FEMA within 2 weeks. Little funding is available to tenants.
Households also will be accessing their insurance coverage. Those who have recently updated their policies may find that replacement values are close to losses. Residents in California have not seen a lot of job loss (unlike Katrina), as most workplaces were not affected. No evacuees are expected.
Yet there is the trauma of the event and the tragic loss of treasured mementos. Some, especially tenants, have suffered significant losses that will not be covered either by FEMA or insurance. In addition, many will need counseling. There is the potential of setting up Camp Noah programs in order to respond to the fears and to strengthen the children who have experienced these events. The best way to respond to their needs is through direct contributions to Lutheran Disaster Response. Checks may be sent to P.O. Box 71764 Chicago IL 60694-1764 or call: 800-638-3522 Designate your gift for California Wildfires. Norene Goplen,
Coordinator LDR-NW

African Gospel A cappella in concert
Free-will offering to benefit ongoing ministries in Liberia
Milwaukie Lutheran Church 3810 Southeast Lake Road, Milwaukie
7:00 pm
African Gospel A cappella is comprised of six men who are all blind. They have survived a civil war, poverty, and many other hardships. The group met many years ago while attending the School for the Blind in Monrovia, Liberia's capitol city. Together, they represent five different tribes and sing in several native African languages and in English (English is the official language of Liberia).
After the civil war started, all of the men were scattered for a time. Then, in 1992, they regrouped as the "Inspirational Echoes of the Blind." Through song and testimony, they ministered and evangelized throughout the city of Monrovia and beyond. In 1998, all six men came to America and toured forty-six states as the "Liberian A capella Choir."
Through their ministry efforts, many orphans in Liberia benefited by receiving food and care. The primary goal of AGA is to share the Good News of Jesus Christ through song and testimony. Secondly, the group desires to focus awareness on the plight of people in Africa, especially the disabled.
The group writes and composes their own gospel songs. Last year, the group released their first CD titled "For Me to Live is Christ" (you can hear music clips on their web site). Their second CD, titled "Yulo Mun Woloh (There Will Be a Child Born in Bethlehem) has just become available. Prior to forming their current ministry, they toured the United States for four years as Liberian Gospel A cappella, a ministry that aids orphanages in the war-torn country. In America alone, the group has performed in more than 1,000 schools and churches. Through song and testimony, they will minister to you about God's love.
