Gather at the statue of Dr. King on the
northeast side of the Oregon Convention Center,

Join us for a peaceful walk to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 40th anniversary of his death. At 11:30 a.m., we will walk across the Steel Bridge to the Japanese American Historical Plaza at NW Couch and Naito Parkway. There we will hear speakers that will encourage us to live in harmony with each other with respect for all people. Speakers include: Bishop David Brauer-Rieke, Oregon Synod, ELCA; and Rev. Acena Boozer, priest, St. Philip the Deacon in NE Portland and past President of EMO. Come meet us at the statue of Dr. King and walk with us; or bring a lunch and join us for the speakers at the Japanese American Historical Plaza. This event is sponsored by the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon and the Commission to End Racism, the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon.

The women of the SW Washington Synod invite women of the Oregon Synod to join them in retreat Friday evening. April 4th through Sunday afternoon. April 6th at Falls Creek Retreat in Raymond, WA. Pastor Robyn Hartwig, of Portland, OR will lead a weekend of Bible Study, prayer, joyful fellowship as we gather resources from our faith to help us meaningfully address the environmental crisis. We will turn our attention to the Exodus story and listen for parallels as we share our stories of struggle, courage and hope with one another. Rev. Michael Meier, author, stewardship leader and currently serving as a Steward Key Leader with the ELCA Steward Key Leader ministry is no stranger to the Oregon Synod. He served as Campus Pastor at Oregon State – Corvallis and later related to the Oregon Synod as Stewardship Specialist with the Division for Congregational Ministries of the ELCA. Michael retired as Director of Mission Support for the ELCA and moved right into serving as a Steward Key Leader with the SKL ministry of the ELCA. Michael brings his life’s experience as a steward to his work and motivational speaking.

Global Mission Companion Synod Poland Trip

Our Companion Synod Program links the Oregon Synod with the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland. Each year a group from Oregon Synod has been traveling to Poland to as volunteers for this program, they have participated in a camp experience that has affected the lives of numerous children of Poland.
The main job of anyone who will be going is to participate in leading small groups discussions and participate in leading activities like: crafts, baseball, scavenger hunts, art and other activities. This year the cost for this trip is $2475 (Airport/Foreign Departure From Portland) The tour cost is per person. The trip is limited to 12 participants.

The quintet is comprised of five professional symphonic musicians (2 trumpets, French horn, trombone and tuba) from Columbia and Washington Counties. They work with several symphonies in the area and meet on their own time for the joy of playing brass quintet literature. They have performed for political and patriotic events with a program of American patriotic music and other concert favorites. For this event they plan a concert of Marches, New Orleans Jazz , some Hispanic numbers and show tunes.
Admission is free. Donations will be requested. The SW Portland Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has provided a $1000 matching grant.

An established preschool in Anchorage, Alaska has the position of Director available starting with the 2008-09 school year. The preschool provides morning 2 and 3 day classes for three-year-olds, morning 3 day classes for four-year-olds, and an afternoon 4 day pre-kindergarten program for older students. Current enrollment is 120 children. Position qualifications include a degree in early childhood education, 3 years experience in center-based childcare, and the ability to pass a background check. The Director is responsible for all aspects of the preschool operation including but not limited to program design, staffing, health and safety, and budgeting. The Director is a staff member of Amazing Grace Lutheran Church. Compensation package includes a salary of $40K-$50K (DOE) and health and retirement benefits.
