2008 Bishop's Convocation
2008 Annual Bishop’s Convocation
January 2-4
Best Western Ocean View Resort, Seaside Bishop's
Convocation is one of those times I've always genuinely looked forward to. Serving you now as bishop, that feeling has not changed. I value our time together as colleagues. I seek closer ties and a shared spirit as a ministerium. The joy of sharing God's work in our midst is tremendously renewing. Susan and I invite you to this year's Convocation anxious to be as one in worship, learning, and mutual support. Diana Butler Bass is also an engaging and insightful Christian voice you won't want to miss. Please make every effort to attend this year's offering. God has called us to pastoral leadership here in Oregon. Together we are able to respond with strength, hope, and energy. - Bishop Dave
Diana Butler Bass
Often when we are a part of a mainline denomination we find ourselves struggling with the revitalization of our congregations and learning what it means to lead a ‘missional church’. Dr. Bass' presentation will give confidence to "mainline" pastors who are wringing their hands about the future of their congregations. Bass will give example after example of churches that have remained true to themselves and have found ways to adapt their ministries to the people and circumstances in which they find themselves in a changing world. Bass is the author of “Christianity for the Rest of Us: How the Neighborhood Church is Transforming the Faith,” and six other books on American religious practice.
Our Agenda
Our agenda is anchored in worship, designed around mutual conversation and rich with opportunities for growth and revitalization.
The "Just War" discussion is one our Assembly has
asked us to engage. We will begin there. Worship and a relaxing evening will round out our first day. Thursday morning is dedicated to mutual discernment around our
common calling as rostered leaders in this place. How can we, together, best serve God's people in this
state?
Thursday afternoon is open for you to connect, resource, or renew as you see fit. Thursday night and Friday we engage our guest speaker and her vision for ministry. Closing worship will center on our reception of Susan Kintner in her new calling as Assistant to the Bishop and offer us all the opportunity to reinvest and reaffirm God's will for our work. Join us, join us, join us!
